PRESS RELEASE: Design Students Create HHR Panel 'Wrap Stars'

Chevrolet Teams Up With the College for Creative Studies (CCS) for a Unique Contest: One Chosen 'Wrapper' is Heading to the New York Auto Show

A creative alliance between Chevrolet and Detroit's College for Creative Studies gave CCS students real-life experience in the competitive world of design and consulting, and provided Chevrolet with a glimpse of what vehicles and brands stir young adults’ souls.

Seven CCS juniors researched target demographics and created exclusive designs and integrated marketing plans, aimed at 18- 25-year-olds, for Chevy’s brand-new HHR Panel. An executive team lead by GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz chose the winning concept, “Skull from Hell,” developed by Jim McCammon of Livonia, which was brought to life on the HHR Panel. McCammon’s artistry will be on display at the New York Auto Show beginning Wednesday through April 15. The show, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center , opens to the public on Friday.

“This project with CCS is a unique opportunity for Chevrolet to promote the HHR Panel to a specific audience while allowing students’ creativity to shine on the vehicles’ blank canvas,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “It’s a great way to demonstrate how to make the HHR Panel a perfect fit for its audience, whether it’s a large company, small business or an individual who just wants to be expressive. I think enthusiasts will be inspired by the student designs and we’ll see more customizing like this on the road.”

HHR Panel production began this month. It will be offered in LS and LT trims, with 2.2L and 2.4L engines – both of which help the HHR deliver 30 mpg in highway driving.

“We are thrilled that students in our Integrated Marketing class have been asked to take on this exciting real-world project. It provides a perfect example of how the Chevrolet brand experience extends beyond traditional media,” said Mark Zapico, chair of Advertising Design at CCS. “The commitment by Chevrolet and the time they have given to enriching the education of these students has been unbelievable.”

2008 Subaru Tribeca: Official Press Release & Images unleashed prior to New York Show premiere

Ladies & Gentleman, here’s yet another innovative work of Subaru’s imaginative design team: the updated 2008 Tribeca. And to show how different their new model is Subie threw out “B9” from Tribeca’s name. Behind that aggressive SpongeBob-Squarepants styled grille the revised Tribeca hides a newly designed 3.6-liter boxer engine with a higher output than the outgoing 3.0-liter (256Hp vs 245Hp) that’s combined to a substantially revised 5-speed Automatic transmission. Wow, wow, wow… -Click “Read More…” below to see the press release

Press Release:

SUBARU UNVEILS REDESIGNED 2008 TRIBECA AND DEBUTS NEW 3.6-LITER H6 ENGINE

2008 Tribeca Features More Style, More Power and Improved Efficiency

New 3.6-liter Delivers 256 HP and 247 lb.-ft. on Regular Gas

Seven Passenger Seating in an Award Winning Interior

New York, NY April 4, 2007 / PRNewswire /–Subaru today unveiled the redesigned and newly named 2008 Subaru Tribeca at the New York International Auto Show. With powerful new styling, a new, larger displacement 3.6-liter H6 engine, improved performance and fuel efficiency, the new 2008 Subaru Tribeca delivers a unique balance of style, safety and functionality in a progressive SUV form.

NEW DESIGN, MORE STYLE

The exterior design of the new Tribeca is both streamlined and powerful, with a new, wider and taller grille, new front fenders and new hood design. The grille is now integrated into the front bumper, featuring a new chrome spread-wing design, with the Subaru star cluster badge as the focal point.

A raised hood line, deeper front valance and new headlamps visually widen and heighten the Tribeca, establishing greater road presence with a more SUV-like appearance. The new grille flows into a powerful silhouette, enhanced by new rear three-quarter windows. The rear quarter windows are also functional, and with the addition of new larger side-view mirrors, improve side and rear vision as well as increasing visibility for third row passengers. The side profile also features powerful fender and wheel forms that enhance the Tribeca's signature rising character line. All-new rear styling includes a new rear valance below the tailgate and new, wider taillamps.

MORE POWER: NEW 3.6-LITER H6 ENGINE

The dramatic exterior styling changes reflect the major changes under the skin for the 2008 Subaru Tribeca. A new 3.6-liter boxer engine has been designed with a goal of improving low-end torque and also lowering consumer running costs with a change to regular unleaded fuel. The larger engine displacement has increased engine torque to 247 lb.-ft., up from 215, and horsepower to 256 from 245, providing improved low-end torque without sacrificing high-rpm power. The new engine package, despite the larger engine size, not only maintains emissions levels but delivers improved fuel efficiency in real world driving situations.

To achieve these goals without affecting engine packaging, a unique shortened con rod was created to allow for a new and larger displacement engine without increasing the physical dimensions of the power unit. Keeping the deck height of the engine the same, the Tribeca is able to maintain its excellent low center of gravity. Improved cooling efficiency - needed to achieve the use of regular fuel - was achieved through a new common rail cooling system that individually cools each cylinder with water separation chambers rather than allowing water to flow from cylinder to cylinder. This allows for increased engine efficiency and standardized timing for all cylinders.

The new 3.6-liter engine features Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves (the 3.0-liter engine had AVCS on the intake side only).

The new 3.6-liter H6 engine is connected to a substantially revised 5-speed automatic transmission that features an all-new torque lock-up converter and a new transmission control unit that deliver faster shifts and quicker reaction time. The new transmission delivers smoother shifts with less lag time and weighs less than the previous system, for a total weight reduction of 9.7-lbs. for the new drivetrain.

The transmission drives through the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Enhancing the AWD system are standard Variable Torque Distribution (VTD), standard Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and four-wheel traction control system (TCS).

IMPROVED ACCESS AND COMFORT

The design of the award-winning Tribeca interior is maintained, but third row seating access has been enhanced. Also new for 2008 is a re-calibrated rear suspension with new bushings to improve ride comfort.

New for 2008, the second row seat now features a tilt-and-slide control on both the driver's and passenger's side and a new assist spring that reduces the effort needed to slide the second row seat. Also new are molded assist grab handles on the lower C-pillar to ease step in to the third row.

AWARD WINNING INTERIOR BLENDS DESIGN AND COMFORT

The sophisticated twin cockpit design features a flowing, sculpted dash and center console design. Aluminum-look trim highlights the sculpted shapes of the dashboard. Electroluminescent dials and subtle ambient interior lighting provide a sophisticated touch, illuminating the front and rear footwells, the center console and cup-holders. The center console is dominated by an information center that groups the readouts for the audio system, clock, fuel economy and outside temperature. A seven-inch touch screen information center is standard with the navigation system. The easy-to-use audio and climate control system controls are located just below the screen.

FLEXIBLE 5 OR 7-PASSENGER CAPABILITY

The Tribeca is available in a variety of 5 and 7-passenger configurations. The 7-passenger model is equipped with a standard with a 50/50 split fold-down third-row seat that features integral headrests and carpeted back surface. For added passenger comfort, the 7-passenger model also features an auxiliary rear cabin air conditioner with fan speed control in the second row. The 7 passenger Tribeca models can be equipped with an available rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

SAFETY

The new 2008 Tribeca was designed with achieving the highest ratings in the auto industry. The previous generation B9 Tribeca achieved top honors in the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash tests with 5-stars in both the frontal and side-impact crash tests for both the driver and passenger seating positions. These results are in addition to the 4-star rating in the NHTSA tests for rollover resistance. (No SUV to date has earned 5-stars in the rollover test.)

The Subaru Tribeca features a Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame Structure, occupant-sensing, dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, seat-mounted side impact air bags, and standard curtain side air bags (front and second rows). A Roll Sensor system that detects a potential vehicle rollover and deploys the standard side curtain airbags is also standard. In addition, the Tribeca features Brake Assist on its standard ABS brake system, Vehicle Dynamics Control and four-wheel traction control. Brake Assist analyzes the force and stroke on the brake pedal and increases hydraulic boost to provide enhanced emergency braking, also activating the ABS system early if needed.

GM to unveil next iteration of the Chevrolet Volt and a new Buick concept at the 2007 Shanghai Show

Logical isn’t it – I mean China has the world's second largest car market in the world, just behind the US and ahead of Japan. Leaving aside the next iteration of the well-received, battery-powered Volta, I have to admit that it sounds kinda weird when GM says that the new Buick concept which was developed at PATAC in Shanghai is “a precursor of future global Buick design language”. Chinese designers drawing the future for Buick? On the other hand, how bad could it be judging from Buick’s current products? We’ll just have to wait till the 22nd of April when the Auto Shanghai 2007 begins to find out. -Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release

PRESS RELEASE: GM to Unveil Two Global Concepts at Auto Shanghai 2007

Shanghai, China – For the first time ever, General Motors Corp. and its Chinese joint ventures will unveil two new global concepts in China at Auto Shanghai 2007.

The two concepts – the next iteration of the flexible Chevrolet Volt architecture, GM's extended-range electric passenger vehicle, and a stunning new Buick hinting at possible future directions for the brand worldwide – will showcase GM’s latest achievements in automotive research and design in the world’s fastest-growing vehicle market.

They will be appearing on the 4,500-square-meter stand of GM China and its Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling joint ventures. The GM family in China will be displaying a total of 40 production and concept vehicles at Auto Shanghai 2007, which begins on April 22 and runs through April 28.

“This is a year of milestones for General Motors in China, with our Shanghai GM and Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) joint ventures celebrating their 10th anniversary and SAIC-GM-Wuling celebrating its fifth anniversary,” said GM China Group President and Managing Director Kevin E. Wale. “Our exhibit at Auto Shanghai 2007 will demonstrate our commitment to working with our partners and joint ventures in order to expand our offering of products featuring the latest technology.”

A highlight will be the Chevrolet Volt, which received tremendous acclaim upon its introduction at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January. “That GM would choose Shanghai as the location to introduce the next iteration of the Volt is a reflection of how GM is contributing to the industry’s long-term sustainable development by sharing its latest achievements and technologies with its friends and partners in China,” Wale said.

The Buick concept car was developed to communicate the global design vocabulary of one of GM’s most distinguished brands. A precursor of future global Buick design language, it was developed at PATAC in Shanghai, underscoring the automotive engineering and design center’s growing capability and role within GM’s engineering and design network.

Making their Asia debut at Auto Shanghai 2007 will be two models from GM’s Opel brand from Germany: the Astra GTC with Panorama windshield and the Astra TwinTop. Shanghai GM will be showcasing additional products from Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Saab, while SAIC-GM-Wuling will display several products from its mini-vehicle lineup.

New York Preview: 2008 Mercedes C-Class US Spec

We won’t bore you much with this one, as I’m sure you’ve taken enough doses of C-Class over the previous months. We’ll just inform you that the only difference we spotted between the Euro and US spec C-Class are the extra turning-signals on the front bumpers – despite Mercedes USA CEO, Ernst Lieb’s talk about distinct styling cues for the US version in an interview he gave to Automotive News (sub. Required) in February. The new C-Class will be launched in the US this fall where it will be available with three V6-powered models – the C350 Sport (3.5 V6 268Hp) , the C300 Luxury and Sport (3.0 V6 228Hp). The latter will also be offered in all-wheel-drive guises. Via: Autoblog.com , Source MB USA

Next-Generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class Makes U.S. Debut
New Sport and Luxury Models Unveiled at New York Auto Show

The fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan is making its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show, open to the public April 6-15, 2007 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. The next-generation 2008 C-Class sedan is slightly larger than its highly successful predecessor, with a greater emphasis on agility, comfort and safety.

With a nod to the recently introduced S-Class sedan, the look of the new mid-size C-Class reveals the latest Mercedes design idiom that's characterized by an edgy interplay of taut lines and wide, rounded surfaces. Revised suspension and steering help make the new C-Class noticeably more agile, along with a new slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission for the C300 Sport model.

V6 Power With a Sport or Luxury Personality
In the U.S. market, the new C-Class will be launched this fall with three V6-powered models – the C350 Sport, the C300 Luxury and the C300 Sport. In addition, the C300 Sport and Luxury models will be available with an all new 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system mated to a seven-speed transmission. New standard equipment includes a power sunroof, eight-way power front seats with lumbar support, two-zone automatic climate control, 17-inch wheels, Bluetooth connectivity and a central controller with a seven-inch display screen.

Distinctive Sport Models
The AMG-inspired C-Class Sport models can be identified by the iconic three-pointed star in the front grille, a design cue usually reserved for its coupes and convertibles. In addition to the grille-mounted star, the new C-Class Sport models come with AMG cladding – deeper front and rear aprons as well as under-door rocker panels – and twin-spoke 17-inch wheels of staggered width. The car also features sport shocks, springs and stabilizer bars that provide a crisper ride and more than a half-inch lower ride height. Instead of the Luxury model's traditional four-spoke wheel and burl walnut trim, Sport models come with three-spoke steering wheels and either aluminum (C300) or black Birdseye maple (C350) interior trim.

Optional 4MATIC Four-Wheel Drive
As modern all-wheel-drive systems become even more refined, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. With negligible weight and fuel-efficiency tradeoffs, full-time four-wheel-drive systems provide year-round traction and stability benefits on both wet and dry roads.

The latest version of the Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is optionally available on the new-generation C300 Sport and the C300 Luxury model. After making its debut on the new-generation S-Class sedan, the new 4MATIC system features a totally redesigned full-time all-wheel-drive system that's integrated into the seven-speed automatic transmission. The new system fits right into the standard body and utilizes the existing front suspension – gone are the special suspension parts and wider transmission tunnel that were necessary on earlier 4MATIC systems.

The extra gears and shafts that drive the front wheels now weigh only 145 pounds more than the rear-wheel-drive model. Fuel efficiency has been improved, due to a number of innovative measures that minimize the energy needed to turn the extra hardware.

More Space, More Comfort, More Cargo
More space means more comfort. With a body that's 3.7 inches longer and 1.7 inches wider than the previous model, the new C-Class boasts a noticeably roomier cabin in both the front and rear seating areas, and an increased wheelbase of 1.8 inches. The new car has more luggage room, too – according to the VDA measuring method, the trunk capacity is now 16.8 cubic feet – four percent more than the outgoing model.

A High-Performance Instrument Cluster

A new instrument cluster features three analog gauges that show engine speed, road speed, fuel level and coolant temperature. In addition, a display in the center of the speedometer is linked to a 12-button multi-function steering wheel that can call up a variety of helpful information including range, oil level, phone and audio system information such as radio station or CD track or iPod playlist (if optional iPod integration kit is equipped). If the car is equipped with the optional navigation system, this display will also show next-turn directions.

A standard-equipment Bluetooth feature allows a phone that's still in a pocket or purse to be operated through the audio system.

Electronic Controller Replaces Scores of Buttons
Similar to the popular system launched on the S-Class sedan, an electronic controller on the console works like a computer mouse to provide easy, quick operation of many functions that used to require scores of separate buttons and switches.

By turning and pressing the aluminum controller, menus and sub-menus on the center-console display are displayed and selected for the audio system as well as the optional navigation system and integrated phone. The controller is also linked to the rocker switches on the multifunction steering wheel.

A Choice of Audio Systems
Standard equipment in the new C-Class is an eight-speaker, 100-watt Audio 20 system that includes a single-slot dash CD/MP3 player, telephone keypad, an MP3 plug in the glove box and a Bluetooth interface. Optionally available is a 450-watt harman/kardon LOGIC7 audio system featuring Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 surround sound. The LOGIC7 system comes with 12 speakers, including two surround-sound speakers and a sub-woofer.
The new C-Class includes a MusicRegister feature as part of the Multimedia package, which enables CD "ripping" (saving) to a four-gigabyte hard drive that can store up to 1,000 tracks from an audio CD. A Gracenote database automatically identifies each track with its title, artist, album name and other information. The audio system can also play tracks stored on a data CD, DVD or memory card.

No Need to Ask for Directions with COMAND Navigation
A five-inch color display nestled under a flip-up cover at the top of the center console is standard equipment on the new C-Class. When the car is equipped with the optional COMAND navigation system, a power-operated seven-inch display screen slides out and up when the flip-up cover is raised.
The navigation system uses a hard drive with map data covering all of North America. In addition to the high-resolution map display at the top of the center console, next-turn navigation instructions can also be shown in the instrument cluster central display.

Renowned Mercedes-Benz Safety
The 2008 C-Class comes with all the safety features that people have come to expect from Mercedes-Benz – from four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes to six air bags, ABS anti-lock, traction control and ESP stability control. In addition, active front head restraints move forward nearly two inches and upward by about an inch in the event of a severe rear collision, helping to support the head and reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries.

Sexy Russian outfit for the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX...

Enough with the whining on Subaru’s 2008 Impreza WRX looks; it’s time to put forward some drastic solutions. Obviously, tuners are going to have a party with the new Impreza but it’ll probably take a few months before we see any results, so until then we’ll recommend a cheap but undoubtedly sexy outfit adopted by a rather adventurous Russian comrade for his current generation Impreza WRX.
